Facts and figures helps us take the cultural and structural actions needed to achieve gender equality. MINDtheGEPs partners are developing and implementing Gender Equality Plans (or ‘GEPs’, built on data from across the organisation.
On 12 May 2023, we presented results and policy recommendations from our mapping of the push and pull factors that are (de)constructing gender inequalities across a research career, and on different levels. Why? Because gender is a social structure that is characterized by multiple intersected barriers, requiring multiple intersected actions to be removed.

During our Open Forum on 12 May 2023, Cristina Solera from the Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Turin, Manuela Naldini from the University of Turin and Lucio Pisacane from the Italian National Research Council (CNR) presented the outcomes of our qualitative and quantitative data collection project across seven European research organisations. A recording of the webinar is now available to watch!
The speakers provided the basis for our recommendations on how to formulate evidence-based strategies to develop impactful gender equality plans within research performing organisations, and shared evidence and recommendations for:
- Decision making bodies: gendering leaders and institutions
- Balancing recruitment and career progression
- Improving work-life balance
- Gendering research and teaching.

About the speakers
Cristina Solera is the coordinator of MINDtheGEPs. She is Associate Professor of Sociology at the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society at the University of Turin and an affiliate at Collegio Carlo Alberto. Her research interests include women's labour-market participation, work-family reconciliation, new models of motherhood and fatherhood, comparative social policies, gender, and class inequalities.
Manuela Naldini is full Professor of Sociology at University of Turin and Fellow at the Collegio Carlo Alberto. She will coordinate the work to interview researchers and key informants in partner organisations that are implementing gender equality plans.
Lucio Pisacane is researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR). He is leading the MINDtheGEPs team at CNR designing the gender equality plan for systemic institutional change and supporting the management and implementation of the project.
About MINDtheGEPs More & more women are choosing research careers, but women are still underrepresented: as authors, as leaders, and in top positions. MINDtheGEPs will change this pattern, with 10 partners spending 4 years, using gender data to identify the extent and causes of inequalities. We will change structures and cultures in 7 universities and research centres across Europe. With the goal to fix the system, not the women!
